Alternative Summer Break (ASuB) is a 2.5-week service trip in which participants travel to Kenya to support Living Positive Kenya, a local organization in Ngong Hills.
This trip focuses on several social issues like education, health, and HIV/AIDs. Learn to become a citizen of the world through strong direct service and reflection, and connect with other students who are looking to make a difference.
Students who are selected to serve on the trip participate in pre-trip meetings throughout academic year to help educate themselves on the language and culture of the community they will be serving.
Students will only be able to participate in ASuB once during their time at Illinois State, either as a student or as a Trip Leader, so that more people can enjoy this experience. Additionally, students selected to attend Alternative Summer Break MUST have previously attended an Alternative Break or have committed to attending a trip (winter break, spring break, or a weekend trip) during the 2019-2020 school year.
Cost: $2,400, all-inclusive. Charges will be billed on your student account.
While COVID-19 is preventing us from offering our traditional trip to Kenya in 2021, we're excited to be planning several domestic trips for May 2021! Trip size is extremely limited due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Fees for a trip are based on a student's Expected Family Contribution (EFC) as determined through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process. Costs will decrease as a student’s EFC lowers. Fees are charged to students' accounts in mid-May.
