Student Leaders in Community Engagement

Student Leaders in Community Engagement (SLiCE) is a leadership development program at Illinois State University’s Center for Civic Engagement. Founded in 2018, SLiCE offers students hands-on opportunities to lead service initiatives, collaborate with community partners, and engage critically with social issues affecting their communities.

Through a structured curriculum that emphasizes equity, reflection, and civic engagement theory, SLiCE students explore the root causes of social issues and consider service as one of many tools for social change. SLiCE students are an integral part of the CCE team, actively supporting many of the Center’s signature programs, such as September Service Days, SOCKtober, Holiday Helper, Bring It Back to Normal, and service trips.

The program is intentionally multifaceted, allowing students to develop transferable skills that extend beyond civic engagement. Through their work, SLiCE students strengthen communication, planning, time management, problem-solving, and leadership skills that prepare them for a wide range of future careers.
SLiCE is open to students from all majors, and participants are encouraged to connect their academic interests with their community engagement work.

Applications for SLiCE open periodically throughout the year. Open positions are posted on the ISU Jobs webpage as they become available. Students interested in civic engagement, leadership development, and community impact are encouraged to apply.
